Selection for the Lowy Award was based on the complete design-to-flight process. All three teams – Ascension Aerospace, Applied Industries, and Manureva Aerospace – completed all elements of the 401/402 design-build-test-fly sequence with success. All three teams met challenges in their first flight, requiring repairs and modifications, and conducted successful final flights. Manuerva Aerospace was selected because the selection committee agreed that Manureva’s airplane retained substantial elements of their original design into the flight vehicle. For example, they retained the original complexity of the wing taper, fuselage dimensions, and tail configuration, and following the first flight tests, properly identified the modification necessary for the scaled version of their original design.
