Texas A&M University senior, Emily Boster, has been named as a 2012 recipient of a $10,000 national award by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF). This award is given to 28 of the brightest and most promising students across the country with interests in science or engineering.

COLLEGE STATION – This summer the Texas A&M University Institute for Advanced Study (TIAS) will invite up to ten top researchers and scholars from sister institutions from around the world to collaborate as TIAS Faculty Fellows with faculty and student scholars at Texas A&M.

Texas A&M Sigma Gamma Tau President, Austin Probe, presented Dr. Helen Reed with the 2012 Thomas U. McElmurry Teaching Excellence Award at the AIAA Banquet on May 2, 2012. Decided by the 2012 May and December graduating seniors, the award cited Dr. Reed for "exemplifying dedication and commitment to developing students professionally and academically by displaying a desire for students to succeed, creatively presenting classroom material, and offering opportunities for mentorship and guidance outside the classroom in the Aerospace Engineering Department at Texas A&M University".

Dr. John Hurtado, associate professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, has been chosen as the keynote speaker for the 2012 Freshman Convocation Aug. 26 in Reed Arena.

Texas A&M is excited about the unique opportunity to acquire a donation of the fully operational NASA Space Shuttle Simulator from the Johnson Space Center. The Shuttle Mission Simulator (SMS) has trained 355 astronauts for 135 missions and will be the only large piece of equipment from the NASA space shuttle program that will remain in the state of Texas.

A new motor was installed in the Oran W Nicks Low Speed Wind Tunnel recently, replacing a 900RPM, 1000HP Synchronous motor from Allis-Chalmers that was surplused by the US Navy back in World War II. The old motor was in service at the Low Speed Wind Tunnel for 70 years after being surplused!
