On March 30, David Kanipe, Lecturer in the Aerospace Engineering department, and Kristi Shryock, Assistant Department Head, traveled with 40 aerospace engineering students for a tour through the GE On Wing Support Facility in Grand Prairie, TX. Students were members of the AERO 101 – Principles of Aerospace Engineering course, which provides a first-hand experience to aerospace engineering for freshmen and sophomores in the department. In addition, upper-level students who serve as mentors for the AERO 101 students also attended.
The tour was led by Joel Corbitt and Du Thach from GE. The students were able to see the inner workings of the jet engines up close and received detailed explanations of how they work and what type of repairs are made. Afterwards, the students toured through the rest of the facility and then formed small groups and engaged in a discussion about jet engines, the work GE OWS does and other questions that came to their mind. Overall the tour was a success, and our students left a good lasting impression on the staff at OWS. Thank you, GE OWS for your time!
